Beijing, Oct 26 (Xinhua) Chinese authorities have approved the construction of a new high-speed railway line to link Beijing and Shanghai, the commercial capital of China.
The construction of the project that would run passenger trains at 200 km/h will start this year said Su Shun, deputy director of transportation department with the ministry of railway.
The construction, which was approved by the State Council on March 7, is now at the research stage, the Beijing Daily quoted an official with the ministry as saying.
The century-old Beijing-Shanghai railway was completed in 1912 and has become China's busiest line.
The region along the Beijing-Shanghai railway line has turned into the most prosperous economic corridors in the country, accounting for 43.2 percent of the gross domestic production last year.
