How deep Hindutva has spread its tentacles in the country in general in the North Indian State of Uttar Pradesh can be gauged with two recent developments the Urdu dailies revealed last week. The Akhbar-e-Mashriq (January 10) reports the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party administration of Uttar Pradesh’s bid to appoint Director General (Vigilance) JL Sharma as Director General Police of the State well before the Assembly Elections in the State.
The present DGP Yuva Singh is being removed in the light of a recent directive issued by the Supreme Court, and the IPS officers whose names have surfaced to succeed him include JL Sharma. Although more senior IPS officers than Mr Sharma are there in the State, the latter is surpassing all of them simply because he is on one hand very close to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and on the other owing to his alleged out and out Hindutva mentality he is close to Sangh Parivar and especially former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.
The Mashriq report adds that in 1990 when the wave of Hindutva was at its climax during Mulayam Singh’s first stint as Chief Minister in the State, the same JL Sharma was then Inspector General Police Lucknow zone who had raided Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulema Deoband during the intervening night of November 21-22, 1990 in the vain search of Kashmiri terrorists on the campus of this Islamic seminary.
The report also refers to the recent attempt to defame Imarat Shariah Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand on the part of three senior IPS officers of the State – BK Bhalla, JP Yadav and Malkhan Singh – who had made very baseless but sensational revelations claiming that this prime Muslim institution based in Phulwari Sharif is the ‘safe haven’ for terrorists, that 200 Muslim terrorists had landed in Uttar Pradesh and that 17 districts of the State are under the target of Muslim terrorists.
The report alleges that a large section of UP police has turned communal, and wonders what would happen if such a rabidly communal police team would be allowed to be headed by a ‘Sangh Parivar favourite’ like JL Sharma.
The Hindustan Express of January 11 reports how the Allahabad High Court castigated the government of Uttar Pradesh for patronising Vishwa Hindu Parishad at the expense of government exchequer. In a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) filed by Advocate Rajeshwar Singh Yadav of Allahabad the court directed the government to file an affidavit within a fortnight in this regard. The Appellant seeks a court order prohibiting the government to sponsor the VHP’s Ardh Kumbh Mela at Allahabad.
In a detailed report the Mashriq of January 12 reports that the VHP’s three-day international Hindu conclave is to be held from February 11 to 13, and the government has earmarked Rs. eight crore to ‘appease communal Hindus’.
The Express report adds that the Appellant said the Chief Minister has violated the Constitution by granting eight crore rupees for the VHP conclave.
“The revelation of granting Rs. 8 crore to Vishwa Hindu Parishad by the Mulayam Singh administration has created a sensation in the political circles by uncovering one more layer from the close ties between Mulayam and the Sangh Parivar, it said.
During the Eid al-Adha festival the Indian Muslims had to experience trials and tribulations at some places. The most tale-telling is the incident that took place in Mandsur district of BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh. Muslims were harassed allegedly for cow slaughter. A number of Muslims have been detained. The January 12 issue of the Express reports 10 more people have been arrested in this case, bringing the total number of detainees in this case at 29. Six of them have been booked under National Security Act. Those arrested in the fresh spate are Rafeeque Dodya, Rafeeque Chakya, Ibraheem Makdi, Abid Dol, Saeed Dhatiya, Izhar Patel, Sheru Nayara, Babu Khan, Mohammad Hussain Shobrati and Mohammad Rafeeque.
In another development the main accused of March 7, 2006 serial bomb blasts at Sankatmochan Temple and Varanasi Cantt. Railway Station in Varanasi, Waliullah was presented amidst tight security before a court in Ghaziabad on January 10. Waliullah, who was an Imam in a mosque in Phulpur, has been languishing behind the bars for the last nine months. The court directed to bring the case for hearing on February 9 after a complete medical check-up of the accused.
