Grenade blast at Mirwaiz's Srinagar home, no injuries

Srinagar, Jan 15 (IANS) Separatist guerrillas Monday hurled a grenade at the heavily guarded house of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chief of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, in an upscale area of this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital.

Police said no one was injured in the explosion, in the backyard of the house in the upscale Nageen locality, 10 km from the city centre Lal Chowk.

According to witnesses, police guards at the Mirwaiz's house fired several rounds in air immediately after the explosion.

"The rifle grenade fell in the backyard of the house and exploded. However, no one was wounded in the explosion," said a senior police officer after visiting the spot.

Paramilitary and police reinforcements were rushed to the spot immediately and the area was cordoned off. Searches were conducted in the area but no one was arrested.

A delegation of moderate Hurriyat group led by the Mirwaiz is presently in Jammu to meet leaders of minority Kashmiri Pandit community before their departure for Islamabad later this week.

The Hurriyat leader's house was similarly attacked two years ago.
