China seeks international cooperation to ensure safe Olympics

Beijing, Jan 15 (DPA) China's security agencies called Monday for a better exchange of intelligence information from other countries as they prepared to guard against terrorist attacks and other security threats at the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Olympic security command centre founded an international liaison department, which was to improve cooperation with other nations.

"Safe Olympics are a common goal of the international society," said Qiang Wei, chief of the Olympic security coordination group and Beijing's deputy Communist Party chief. "It cannot be achieved without sufficient international security cooperation."

The liaison department will enhance this cooperative work and information sharing with the security organs of other countries and with Interpol, Qiang said, adding China wanted to learn from the experiences and approaches of other police forces.

The Chinese police also have established a website, www.bjayab.cn, to inform the public in English, French and Chinese of their work and the security preparations for the Olympics.

It is also later to post traffic restrictions during the Summer Games Aug 8-24 in Beijing.

"The present-day world is still far from peaceful," Qiang said. "Olympic Games have been targeted by international terrorist groups. We, therefore, have to be highly alarmed and take pro-active measures in facing every possible threat."
