Fire kills three, injures several in Bangladesh

New Delhi, Feb 26, (IRNA) At least three persons were killed and several wounded, hundreds were believed to be trapped in a major fire that engulfed a multi-storied building housing Bangladesh's two private television channels in Karwan Bazar area in Dhaka on Monday.

A panic stricken worker jumped from the sixth floor of the 12-storey building after the fire broke out at about 10.30 a.m. (local time) and died on the spot, PTI said.

Meanwhile two others died of severe burn wounds in the hospital.

Three Air Force helicopters were seen rescuing people from the rooftop of the building while fire fighters were assisted by army and police personnel to control the blaze, which started from the second floor.

Scores of people were crowding at the rooftop and balconies of different floors, awaiting rescuers as deep black smoke covered the neighborhood of Dhaka's busy business district.

Cause of the fire and how many people remained stranded inside the building was not known but casualties will increase probably.

The private NTV and the RTV television channels, housed in the building, were forced to stop broadcast programs after the fire broke out.
