Yunus gets award from global women's group

Dhaka, March 18 (IANS) Bangladesh Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus received an award from a US-based forum of global women leaders in recognition of his "extraordinary achievement in providing economic opportunity for millions of women around the globe".

He was presented the 2007 Golden Trailblazer Award by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton at a function in Washington Friday.

Vital Voices, a US-based body of global women leaders working to strengthen democracy, increase economic opportunity and fight human rights abuses, which instituted the award has chosen to felicitate a man for the first time.

Yunus received a standing ovation from the distinguished gathering, which included many global women leaders, the Daily Star said. His daughter and Opera singer Monica Yunus performed at the function.
