Political parties say Pope interfering in Mexican domestic affairs

Mexico City, Apr 24 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) Mexico’s PRI and PRD political parties have described the Pope’s anti-abortion statements as meddling in Mexican domestic affairs, local media reported.

The media reports quoted Celso Humberto Delgado, president of the PRI National Commission on Foreign Affairs, as saying that the Pope was drawn by matters that are of legislative prerogative.

Pope Benedict XVI had lashed out at the PRD initiative to approve abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, on which the Mexican Congress is to vote on Tuesday.

Delgado urged every religious congregation and foreigners to respect the national legal system.

The PRD party is readying a communiqué to the Foreign Ministry demanding to send a note to the Vatican to protest the Papal meddling.

By contrast to demands shared by CONAPRED (Consejo Nacional para Prevenir y Erradicar la Discriminacion), the RULING Partido Accion Nacional (PAN) party backs the Pope.

PAN members Carlos Abascal and Jose Espina threatened to issue a motion to annul the law once it is approved.
