L&T to market Swedish trucks in India

Mumbai, Sep 12 (IANS) India's largest construction and engineering firm Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) Monday announced a tie-up with Sweden's Scania to market its heavy-duty trucks in the country.

"These 25-30-tonne heavy-duty trucks will complement L&T's range of hydraulic excavators used in mining and construction around the country," L&T said in a statement here.

The trucks will be imported and sold through L&T's own distribution network for mining and construction equipment.

"The demand of heavy-duty trucks such as special application vehicles like those used in mining and construction is growing very fast in India with increased freight movement. We expect a big market for Scania's trucks in these sectors," the statement said.

Larsen & Toubro is a leading supplier of construction equipment in India and represents Japan-based Komatsu.

"By adding Scania's multi-wheeler construction trucks to its product portfolio, L&T can offer its mining and construction customers a full range of construction equipment," Scania chief executive Leif Ostling said in a statement issued after a meeting with L&T chairman and managing director A.M. Naik in Mumbai.

Citing India's economic growth and expansion of motorways and infrastructure, Ostling said the country would in the long-term "become a significant market also for Scania", news agency DPA reported.

Larsen & Toubro, founded in 1938 by two Danish engineers, reported net income for the 2005-06 fiscal year of 170 million euros ($215 million).
