Andhra assembly stalled again over Telangana

Hyderabad, Aug 24 (IANS) For the second successive day, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) legislators stalled proceedings in the Andhra Pradesh assembly Thursday, insisting on a resolution of their demand for a separate Telangana state.

After the house was adjourned by Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy, the TRS legislators staged a sit-in and blocked traffic in front of the assembly building. Shouting slogans, the TRS legislators and party activists squatted on the busy road, obstructing traffic.

All the protestors were later arrested by police and shifted to a police station. TRS, which quit the United Progressive Alliance government in New Delhi on Tuesday, continued its protest in the state assembly for the second straight day.

As soon as the assembly met for the day, TRS members were once again on their feet demanding that the house take up a debate and pass a resolution favouring separate statehood to Telangana region.

As speaker Reddy turned down their demand and tried to go ahead with the listed agenda, TRS members rushed to the podium of the speaker and started shouting slogans of "Jai Telangana". After they failed to heed the speaker's advice to resume their seats, Reddy adjourned the house for an hour. When the house re-assembled, there was no let up in the cacophony. The speaker then adjourned the house for the day without any business being conducted.

On Wednesday too, the house was adjourned as TRS did not allow any business to be conducted.

Meanwhile, the five dissident TRS legislators appealed to the speaker and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to provide security to them as they feared a threat to their lives from the protestors.

The protestors on Wednesday had ransacked the house of TRS MLA D. Srinivas Rao in Warangal district. TRS has 26 members in the 294-member state assembly.

The chief minister had warned that action would be taken against those indulging in violence. He also expressed his displeasure over the TRS stalling assembly proceedings.
