Police fire to disperse mobs in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Aug 30 (IANS) Police had to resort to firing to disperse a mob in the Essar Refinery colony in Jamnagar Wednesday after the enraged labourers attacked security guards.

A 1,200-strong mob of contract labourers hurled stones at the private security guards after an accident injuring a worker, police said here.

The angry mob set two company-owned jeeps and a motorcycle on fire. Policemen who arrived in the industrial complex in the Saurashtra town, about 350 km from here, to control the situation also faced stone throwing.

Police had to fire 10 rounds to bring the situation under control after teargas shells proved ineffective.

The situation was peaceful after the firing, police said. The injured labourer was taken to a nearby hospital.
