Musharraf on Afghanistan visit
Kabul, September 7 (NDTV.COM) Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf arrived in Kabul on Wednesday amid tight security for a two-day visit.
Musharraf is holding talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, which are expected to focus on allegations that Taliban militants are infiltrating across the border from Pakistan.
The talks come days ahead of the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, which led to the toppling of Afghanistan's Taliban regime.
It had also prompted Musharraf's decision to switch his country's support from the Taliban to the US-led campaign against terror.
"Afghanistan is expecting the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to take effective action against terrorism," Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Sultan Ahmad Baheen said.
On Tuesday, Pakistan's government and pro-Taliban militants signed a peace agreement aimed at ending years of violent unrest on the Pakistani side of the porous border with Afghanistan.
Under the deal, the militants are to halt attacks on Pakistani forces in the North Waziristan region and stop crossing into Afghanistan to attack US and Afghan forces.
In return, Pakistani troops are to stop their military campaign to root out militants from the lawless region.
