Explosion rocks central Kabul, kills 13
Kabul, Sep 8 (DPA) A suicide car bomb attack on allied forces killed at least 13 people, including two US soldiers, and injured 25 others close to the US embassy in the centre of Kabul Friday.
A spokesperson of the coalition forces confirmed that a US convoy was the target of the suicide attack and that two American soldiers were killed and two others were injured.
Kabul police chief Ali Shah Paktiwal said there were at least 11 Afghans killed in the blast and 23 injured.
Eyewitnesses quoted by the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) agency said six foreigners were among the dead, some with limbs torn off.
The news agency said the number of dead and wounded could be as high as 30.
AIP said the Taliban took responsibility for the attack, sourcing Taliban spokesman Mohammad Hanif, who named the suicide bomber as Shah Wali.
Paktiawal said a Toyota Corolla was packed with explosives, which destroyed two other vehicles in the blast.
The explosion comes as NATO top commanders were meeting in Warsaw, Poland, for key strategy discussions on troop commitments to Afghanistan.
A major NATO offensive against Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan has killed hundreds of rebels and dozens of NATO troops in recent weeks.
