Bangladesh polio scares Tripura, launches immunisation
Agartala, Sep 9 (IANS) Health authorities in Tripura Saturday announced a special polio immunisation drive after reports of the infection in neighbouring Bangladesh.
"Reports said at least 11 pulse polio cases have been found in Dhaka, Barisal, Brahambaria, Kishorganj, Chittagang and Hobiganj districts in Bangladesh raising alarm bell in Tripura," said T.K. Das, chief medical officer West Tripura district and a paediatrician.
Nearly 300,000 children in the state below the age of five will be immunised with the pulse polio vaccine in the two-day campaign starting Sep 10.
Health officials are worried the infection from Bangladesh might spread to Tripura with border villages between the two countries adjacent to each other and porous in nature.
"Mobile teams are being engaged to administer polio drops during the campaign," Das said. The state has no records of any polio case in the past six years.
"Considering the risk of the virus spilling over to the state from across the border, strict surveillance was maintained," the health official said.
