Congress student wing dominates Delhi University election
New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS) Congress party's student wing, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) bagged three seats in the Delhi University Students Union election as against one by Bharatiya Janata Party backed Akil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
NSUI candidates Amrita Dhawan (president), Shashi Kant Sharma (secretary) and Tarun Tanwar (joint secretary) won over their rival ABVP candidates in the elections that took place Friday.
However ABVP, which was completely outclassed last year, managed to win the vice president's post. Vikas Dahiya won defeating Abhimanyu Singh of NSUI.
The election that saw electronic voting machines (EVM) for the first time in the history of student union elections in India received a resounding response from students. Touching a five-year high, the turnout was nearly 60 percent.
"The EVMs proved to be a revolution for us. It not only enabled us to conduct the election smoothly but also lessened the time of counting," said a university official, in charge of election.
"Students turn out was also a revelation," he said. Delhi University had recorded less than 40 percent turnout in the last five years.
Over 40 candidates, including 18 women, were in the fray for the top four posts - president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary. Elections were held in 52 colleges. About 20 colleges, including St. Stephens and Lady Sri Ram College, do not participate.
