Dehradun, Sep 9 (IANS) Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Saturday blamed the central government for the Malegaon blasts that killed 38 people and injured 100 others.

On the sidelines of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) national executive meet here, Vajpayee told reporters that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, headed by the Congress, has proved to be "weak".

When asked whether the home minister should take the responsibility for Friday's terror strikes in Malegaon, Vajpayee said: "The whole government is responsible."

He further said that the government should "rethink" its anti-terror strategy.

The bombs, placed in a graveyard near an old mosque in Malegaon town, 300 km from Mumbai, went off around 1.50 p.m. as devotees were coming out after offering their Friday prayers.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi also launched a scathing attack on the central government for the deteriorating internal security situation.

Modi said the UPA government only issues "press statements, makes assessments and waits for the next blast.

"There is a growing sense of insecurity and innocent civilians are losing their lives."

Modi said the government should come up with an anti-terrorism strategy to "instil confidence in citizens".
