Moussa defends Arab right to peaceful use of nuclear energy

Cairo, Sept 9 (NNN-MENA) Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Thursday defended the Arab right to peaceful use of nuclear energy.

"Our right to benefit from peaceful nuclear energy is guaranteed by the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," he said at a press conference with visiting British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett.

Moussa said that the whole nuclear technology issue was linked to the Arab national security. He noted that executive measures connected with peaceful nuclear technology and scientific research and development would be taken in the foreseeable future.

The Arab League chief declined to link the Arab resolution, taken by the Arab foreign ministers on Wedneday, to developments of the Iranian nuclear issue.

He voiced conviction that negotiations were the best way to solve the standoff between Iran and the West to help establish a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.
