Korea edge England, New Zealand hold Pakistan
Moenchengladbach (Germany), Sep 9 (DPA) South Korea enjoyed their second victory when on the trot, as they edged past England 1-0 in Pool B of the men's hockey World Cup.
In other pool A matches played Friday, European champions Spain were held by Argentina 1-1 and Pakistan drew 4-4 with New Zealand in an enthralling match, marred only by slight controversy over one of the Kiwi goals.
The Koreans settled the match in the 59th minute when a free hit outside the D by Seon Jung Kahn was deflected into the goal by Sung Hoon Yoon.
England, who had started the tournament with a 3-2 win over India, could not break down the Korean defence in a game of few opportunities for either side.
European champions Spain went into lead four minutes after the half-time, off a Eduard Tubau strike from a penalty corner. Eleven minutes later Argentina found the equaliser through Lucas Ernan Camareri.
In an open match, Shakeel Abbassi put Pakistan in front in the ninth minute with a penalty stroke after Shea McAleese in the circle caught Rehan Butt. New Zealand goalkeeper Paul Woolford managed to get his stick to the ball but could only deflect it into the net.
Pakistan's lead lasted just five minutes with Dean Couzins equalising with a penalty stroke after the ball hit a Pakistan foot from a Gareth Brooks shot.
Pakistan found themselves behind two minutes later when Blair Hopping made it 2-1 for New Zealand but Muhammad Zubair somehow managed to make it 2-2 in the 22nd minute, squeezing the ball home from an acute angle.
Match umpire David Leiper found himself surrounded by Pakistan players just after the change of sides, after Couzins scored with his second penalty stroke of the game after a Pakistan body blocked Bevan Hari's shot.
However, goalkeeper Salman Akbar was furious as he protested he was not ready but the goal stood and New Zealand led 3-2.
Pakistan stormed back and Butt equalised in the 43rd minute with a reverse stick shot after a quick breakaway.
But New Zealand did not finish yet as Hayden Shaw scored his third goal of the tournament with a flick from a penalty corner to make it 4-3.
Pakistan refused to quit and earned a deserving equaliser five minutes from time when Abbassi found Muhammad Zubair in the circle to make it 4-4.
The result moved Pakistan to the top spot in pool A, followed by New Zealand and Spain. South Korea, who won their opening match against the Netherlands, now top Pool B with six points. Defending champion Germany and the Netherlands are second and third respectively.
