Malegaon: suspects' sketches released, 7/11 link under scanner

Malegaon (Maharashtra), Sep 10 (IANS) Investigators Sunday released the sketches of two men suspected to be behind Friday's blasts here that left 38 people dead, and said they were probing possible links with the July 11 Mumbai blasts.

"The sketches of the suspects have been drawn up based on information provided by by-cycle sellers who had sold the cycles to the suspects. One of the suspects had reportedly paid for the cycles. We are also verifying other information gathered from eyewitness we have questioned," Inspector General of Police (Nashik range) P.K. Jain said.

"From the intensity of wounds sustained by the victims it is apparent that the explosive devices used were of high intensity.

"We have certain leads and are following them. But it is too early to give details," said Jain, who heads a special team probing the blasts.

Sleuths of Mumbai Police's elite Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) said they were investigating any possible link between the Malegaon explosions and the July 11 serial bombings along Mumbai's railway network that killed about 200 people.

On Friday, three bombs went off outside a mosque and a nearby graveyard in this textile town in northwestern Maharashtra, some 300 km from Mumbai.

Devotees had gathered for weekly prayers and to mark the first day of Shab-e-Barat when Muslims pray for the dead.

"The use of RDX is not being ruled out. Initial forensic tests and evidence collected from the bomb sites suggest that identical explosive devices were used in both the Mumbai and Malegaon attacks," said a senior ATS official probing the twin blasts.

A 20-member team of the ATS is camping at Malegaon questioning people and collecting clues in an effort to identity those behind the deadly blasts.

"We are also probing the angle of a local involvement. But it is very premature to identify any particular group or terror outfit at this stage. No group has so far claimed responsibility for both the blasts (in Mumbai and Malegaon)," the official added.
