12 killed in floods, landslides in Nepal

Kathmandu, Sep 10 (DPA) Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have claimed at least 12 lives in Nepal in the past three days, a newspaper report said Sunday.

Nepal Samacharpatra said the worst hit area was Tanahu district, about 117 km away from capital Kathmandu, where landslide buried a house killing six members of a family.

Government officials, however, confirmed only six deaths.

They said Narayangard and Bharatpur towns in Chitwan district were flooded following torrential rains that crippled normal life in the area Saturday.

The traffic on a key highway that links Kathmandu with southern Nepal, disrupted by the floods, resumed early Sunday.

The government run Nepal Television reported landslides in the remote Sankhuwasabha district, while drought conditions prevailed in parts of southeast Nepal including Morang district.

Fresh floods and landslides hit Nepal even as the government was struggling to reach relief materials to thousands that were affected by floods.

The Nepalese government last week announced a relief package of NRS 23.8 million (about $322,000) for 60 out of the country's 75 districts hit by floods or drought.

At a meeting of donors last week to review developmental projects, the government asked for $122 million to rehabilitate the flood victims.
