Missionary catholic schools in Lucknow closed in protest against attack on a girls convent

Lucknow, Sept 11 (ZEENEWS.COM) Missionary catholic schools in Lucknow would remain closed on Monday in protest against the attack on a prestigious girls convent school by BJP activists yesterday where a seance was held to invoke the spirit of Jesus Christ and the state government ordered a probe into the reported fainting of some students during the exercise.

All the 20 catholic schools of the city would remain closed today to register their protest against the attack, state Catholic Educational Institutions Association Secretary Father Paul Rodrigues told reporters here last evening.

Accusing the school authorities of trying to convert its students, BJP youth wing activists attacked the school ransacking flower pots, window panes and glass doors and pelted stones sending the school staff scurrying for cover.

Some parents complained that the school held a seance which was witnessed by hundreds of students, besides staff members, during which several girls fainted in fright.

The girls' school authorities denied that a seance was held and said the students fainted due to the sultry weather condition.

Taking a serious view of the matter and the complaint of the parents, the government ordered an inquiry by the District Magistrate and directed him to submit the report within three days, according to official sources here.

The incident happened on September 6 when Nobo Kumar Mondal, the member of a relatively lesser known 'Chandra' cult from West Bengal, which indulged in the practice of invoking the dead and carrying on a live conversation with them, acted as the medium in the seance, the parents alleged.

The seance was arranged by one Father Sebastian, the priest of a catholic church in West Bengal's Murshidabad, the parents claimed.
