Musharraf expects 'substantive' talks with Singh

Islamabad, Sep 12 (IANS) Ahead of the NAM Summit in Havana, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said he hopes to have "substantive" and "result-oriented" talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sidelines.

"I hope and will make an effort to make the talks substantive, so that these are resultoriented," he was quoted as telling the media before leaving for Brussels on way to New York.

His talks with Singh would "carry much importance", he said. On his part, he would "try to remove misunderstandings".

Foreign office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said the talks would include the Kashmir issue.

No agenda has been fixed, media reports said, adding that meetings in third countries on sidelines of an international conference could not have a rigid agenda.

This will be the first high-level contact between the two countries since the July 11 serial bombings on commuter trains in India's financial capital Mumbai stalled the peace process between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Musharraf, who last met Singh in April 2005 in India, said he would try to remove Indian misunderstandings. He will also hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders.

About the NAM summit, Musharraf said Pakistan will discuss the significance of the issues related to the 116-nation Non-Aligned Movement, especially issues related to the Third World and measures to watch their common interests.

The Foreign Office spokesperson told a weekly briefing that "there is no specific agenda for the Havana meeting (with Singh)".

The two leaders would have detailed discussions on a broad agenda that would include Kashmir, the peace process and any other issue of interest, the spokesman said. However, she did not give details of the preparations that the government has made for these talks.
