'Bomb' found near Malegaon Masjid

Malegaon, Sep 13 (IANS) A bomb-like object was found near a mosque Wednesday afternoon, five days after serial blasts in this Maharashtra town killed 31 people.

The police machinery evacuated the entire area around the Mohmmadia Masjid on Mohammad Ali Road and a shopping complex next to it and bolstered security arrangements in and around the town that is a textile industry hub.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Nashik Range) Anil Kumbhare said top police officials had rushed to the spot to supervise the operations.

"The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) personnel have taken the bomb-like object to a nearby school premises for further examination and disposal, if it turns out to be a bomb", Kumbhare told IANS.

Police were patrolling the town appealing to the people to stay calm, he said.

Salim Bhai, a social activist, said all schools were closed and students were sent home.

"Though the people are concerned and careful, there is no panic," said Ejaz Beig, chairman of the standing committee of the Malegaon Municipal Council.
