Howard rules out abandoning present immigration policy
Sydney, Sept 13 (ZEENEWS.COM) Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who earlier urged moderate Muslims to speak out more often against terrorism, has said he is not in favour of abandoning a non-discriminatory immigration policy as it may send wrong signal to moderate people around the world.
However he favoured reinforcing Australian values to those who intend to migrate to Australia, according to media reports here.
Howard said he would consider Opposition leader Kim Beazley's suggestion that Australian visa forms could include a statement of Australian values so that all people arriving in the country would understand what was expected of them.
"I don't believe in abandoning a nondiscriminatory immigration policy. That would send the wrong signal to moderate people around the world," Howard told MacQuarie Radio today.
He said the message should be to people who come to Australia to live.
"What you have to do is to get people to integrate, and if part of that integration process is to better understand and more strongly commit to Australian values, then I am all for it," he said.
"They would feel they are excluded and would feel there was a universal hostility to a particular religious group and I don't think that is helping", Howard said.
Labour leader Kim Beazley said requiring immigrants to state that they would respect different religious and political views as well as respect women would help moderate Islamic leaders counter the spread of extremism.
