15 killed in Yemen election rally

Sanaa (Yemen), Sep 13 (DPA) Fifteen people were killed and more than 100 injured during a stampede at an election rally of Yemeni President Ali Saleh in Ibb province Tuesday, police sources said.

Tens of thousands attended the rally to hear an address by Saleh, who is seeking a new seven-year term in the country's presidential elections scheduled to take place Sep 20.

Witnesses at the scene told DPA that scores of people were taken from the scene in ambulances.

They said the stampede began when thousands of people, who arrived from villages around the mountainous Ibb city, tried to force their way into a stadium while thousands of people were leaving.

Other witnesses said a platform on which top government officials were standing collapsed as people tried to find ways out of the place, aggravating the situation.
