British home secretary heckled by angry Muslims
London, Sep 20 (DPA) Muslim protesters Wednesday disrupted a speech by British Home Secretary John Reid as he urged Muslim parents to monitor their children for signs of "radicalisation".
The event, in a community centre in London, degenerated into chaos when several protesters were led from the room, describing Reid as an "enemy of Islam".
The home secretary, who has a reputation for toughness, had come to the centre in Leytonstone, east London, to urge Muslim parents to watch out for "tell-tale signs of brainwashing" in their children as part of the global fight against terrorism.
One of the protesters was seen clutching several posters saying: "Reid, you will pay."
Sections of the Muslim community have been outraged by Reid's suggestion that parents should "spy" on their children, as they put it.
Reid was listing past terrorist attacks around the world when the protests began. A man asked Reid how he could "dare to come to a Muslim area after so many Muslims - over a thousand - had been arrested.
"You are an enemy of Islam and Muslims," the protester shouted.
