Thai Coup commanders promise to hand over power to people
Bangkok, Sep 20 (Xinhua) Chief commanders of Tuesday night's coup in Thailand addressed the nation on TV Wednesday, promising to hand over power to the people soon.
Royal Thai Army chief Songdhi Boonyaratkalin, sitting along with the other four members of the National Administrative Reform Council (NARC) who are the chief commanders of last night's coup to oust the Thaksin government, made a speech on TV at around 9:20 local time, the first public statement released after the coup, which was staged late Tuesday night.
The NARC, declared as the provisional top authority over the country, comprises five people who are Thai Army chief, the supreme commander of military forces, top commanders of the Air Force and the Navy, as well as the police chief.
Songdhi stated in the speech of about 10 minutes that the coup was launched to topple a "corrupted government" and solve the political turbulence.
He also promised that none of the NARC members would take leading posts in the new government, and it would transfer the power of governing the country to the people soon.
