Patil holds meeting to solve crisis over sealing drive

New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) A day after the anti-sealing drive protest left a bloody trail of violence in the capital, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Thursday reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting in New Delhi.

Patil, who heads the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to look into the issues pertaining to the sealing drive in Delhi, convened a high-level meeting on the issue on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Lt. Governor B.L. Joshi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Home Secretary V.K. Duggal and other top officials including Union Urban Development Secretary Anil Baijal and MCD Commissioner A.K. Nigam.

Meanwhile, both Central and the Delhi governments have started working on different options to resolve the ongoing crisis, a senior government official said.

"The central and Delhi governments may jointly approach the Supreme Court Friday asking for relief and present a time-bound action plan. The legal aspects of this formula are being looked into," a senior official in the urban development ministry said.

"The central government is still working on a formula under which interests of both traders and resident welfare associations will be taken care of and which satisfies the Supreme Court too," he added.

Four persons were killed, three of them in police firing, and scores of people including security personnel were injured as the traders' bandh against MCD's sealing drive turned violent in many parts of the capital on Wednesday.

The central government is also toying with the idea to call a special Parliament session to consider a constitutional amendment on the issue.
