G8 outreach nations back UN reforms

New York, Sep 21 (IANS) India and other four outreach nations at the G8 summit - Brazil, China, Mexico, and South Africa - have intensified their cooperation for reform of the United Nations and energy security.

The foreign ministers of five countries met Monday on the sidelines of the 61st session of the UN General Assembly and renewed their commitment to the "overall reform of the organization, including the reform of the Security Council," a press statement by the five countries said here.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma met Li Zhaoxing of China, Celso Amorin of Brazil, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma of South Africa and Luis Ernesto Derbez of Mexico and discussed a wide range of regional and global issues with them.

The ministers also discussed the outcome of their meeting in the outreach sessions with the G8 group of the world's most industrialised countries held in the Gleneagles (2005) and St Petersburg (2006) summits that focussed on crucial issues including global terrorism, climate change and energy security.

India and Brazil are part of the G4 grouping - it also includes Japan and Germany - that has tabled a resolution in the UN General Assembly for expansion of the UN Security Council.

"They also recognized the importance of building common approaches between the developed and developing countries on issues of importance to the international community, particularly developing countries," the statement said.

"They reiterated that these challenges can only be effectively addressed through intensified cooperation between developed and developing countries," the statement.

Leading world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, had called for enlargement of the exclusive club to include emerging powers like India and China at the summit held in St. Petersburg in July.

For India, Brazil and South Africa, the meeting between their ministers, a week after the first IBSA summit in Brasilia, provided another opportunity to intensify cooperation in the trilateral framework.
