Opposition's strike brings Dhaka to halt
Dhaka, Sep 21 (Xinhua) Bangladesh's capital Dhaka was isolated from rest of the country Wednesday as the opposition blockaded road, railway and river routes to force the government to undertake electoral reforms before the general elections in January.
Activists of the main opposition Awami League (AL)-led 14 party combine blockaded road communication from other parts of the country to the capital, police said.
The railway service was disrupted as activists sat on the tracks, railway spokesperson Shafiqul Alam said.
Thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets of Dhaka, shouting "no reforms, no election".
The blockade was called by AL chief Sheikh Hasina as part of the ongoing agitation to compel the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led four-party Islamist alliance government of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to reform the caretaker government system and the election process.
Hasina said polls will never be free and fair as the election machinery was headed by BNP supporters.
She said her party-led alliance will not joint the upcoming general elections in January and also not allow the government to hold the polls.
Non-partisan caretaker government conducts the country's general elections since 1996.
Zia's government will handover power to such a government on Oct 28, which will hold the elections within three months.
