SC directs measures to revamp police setup

New Delhi, Sept 23 (ZEENEWS.COM) Directing a slew of measures for revamping the police machinery in the coountry, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to set up a National Security Commission and state-level Security Commissions to provide insulation from extraneous influence in the postings, tenure and functioning of the police officials.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Y K Sabharwal directed the National Human Rights Commission and the government to consider suggestions given in a PIL filed by former DGP Prakash Singh, to transfer cases of terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering to the CBI within the next four months.

A police complaint authority should be established in which complaints against police officials could be filed, the bench observed.

Besides a police establishment board should be established to fix the minimum tenure and selection procedures for police officials, it added.

The judgement came on a PIL filed by the former DGP seeking police reforms.
