Ecuador bus wreck kills 47

Quito, Sept 25 (NDTV.COM) A bus wreck on a winding mountain road killed 47 people as the vehicle overturned near the village of Papallacta, 45 km southeast of the Ecuador capital.

Police spokesman Patricio Quimso said everyone aboard, except five children, was killed. The children sustained injuries.

"According to preliminary information, there are 47 dead and five children who survived," he said.

Quimso added the passengers were believed to family members and friends on an all-day outing.

They were returning to their homes in the community of Amaguana, 16 km south of Quito.

"Due to excess speed, the driver lost control of the bus and it turned over," he said.

A Red Cross spokesman confirmed the number of dead and said the injured children were taken to a hospital in Quito.
