Army captain killed in Kashmir gun battle

Srinagar, Sep 26 (IANS) An Indian Army captain was killed in a fierce gun battle with separatist guerrillas in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district Tuesday.

Troops of the 14 Rashtriya Rifles Tuesday mounted an operation against the separatists in village Sumlar, near Bandipora township in Baramulla, 45 km from here.

"The village was cordoned off on specific inputs that militants were hiding inside. As the operation was in progress, the hiding militants opened fire on the troops, resulting in the death of a captain. The encounter is still on and additional forces have been rushed to the site," a senior police official said here.

On Monday, the day the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan started here, separatist guerrillas killed a woman police constable in the summer capital Srinagar. Five other people - three cops and two civilians - were wounded in the attack.
