Kolkata, Sep 26 (IANS) Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Tuesday said she feared for her honour in West Bengal.

"I will leave Bengal. For the first time they attacked my izzat (honour). I am scared of my honour now. They are playing with my honour," Banerjee said, virtually bringing molestation charges against the government as she broke down before Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi.

Banerjee and other women party cadre like Sonali Guha burst into tears in front of Dasmunsi at the base of Mahatma Gandhi's statue on Mayo Road in central Kolkata where they held a protest. Dasmunsi consoled the Trinamool chief and slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya for the police baton charge on the party workers at Singur in Hooghly district in the wee hours Tuesday.

Banerjee had suffered injuries too and, in a tattered sari, joined the demonstration. The Trinamool workers and several farmers had been injured in the baton charge during their protest against the acquisition of fertile farmlands at Singur, 45 km from here, for Tata Motors' proposed small car unit.

"No civilised society would tolerate such a barbaric attack on women. This is an attack to break a democratic movement. It is not about Mamata only, it is an attack on our mothers and sisters," Dasmunsi said.

"I am a leader from Bengal first and a union minister later. I will take part in the protest rally being held tomorrow (Wednesday)," Dasmunsi announced.

"Police cannot do this without the tacit support of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya," he said. "I would ask Brinda Karat (Communist Party of India-Marxist leader) to come and protest," he added.

Mamata was allegedly lifted, verbally abused, and whisked away by police. It was alleged that her clothes were torn.

Singur has became a launching pad for a new political alignment in West Bengal with the land war bringing the hitherto sparring Congress and Trinamool Congress under one umbrella to fight the communist government.
