Kenya: Muslims protest against police harassment

Nairobi, Sept 30 (NDTV.COM) Hundreds of Kenyan Muslims marched through the capital, Nairobi, on Friday, demonstrating against alleged police harassment and discrimination.

The demonstrations were triggered by the case of a Muslim woman who was held by Kenyan counter-terrorism police for four days after performing a U-turn in her car close to security gates outside the Israeli Embassy.

Police raided her house and arrested her husband, an African-American, holding him for six days.

Both were released without charge, although Kenya's High Court had to step in to order the man's release.

"The Muslim community strongly feels that it is discriminated against and targeted for harassment by the state through the Kenyan police," said Al-Amin Kimathi, executive coordinator of pressure group the Muslim Human Rights Forum, who organised the demonstration.

Protesters carried banners and chanted "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is great") and "stop harassing Muslims" during the protest, which was peaceful, although police fired one round of tear gas.

A police water cannon was on standby in case of violence.

The demonstrators also called for the Israeli embassy in central Nairobi to be moved to the outskirts of the city. Muslims in Kenya make up about a third population. (AP)
