Exit polls predict hung assembly in Uttar Pradesh
New Delhi, April 7 (IANS) Exit polls held after the first phase of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh Saturday predicted a hung assembly with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) becoming the single largest party in the 403-member state assembly.
While Star News predicted 135 seats for the BSP, an NDTV poll said former chief minister Mayawati's party would score between 125 and 135.
The ruling Samajwadi Party is rxpected to win 103, according to Star News, but the other survey said it would bag 120-130 seats.
Both surveys predict a hung assembly in the state.
Although the Star News survey projected 99 seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) NDTV said the party would win 80-90 seats.
While Star News predicted 28 seats for the Congress party, which had 25 in the previous assembly, the NDTV poll said it would gain anything between 40-50, which could make it a crucial player in the state's politics.
While the Star News exit poll predicted 38 seats for other parties in the poll, NDTV gave them between 10 and 20.
In the first of the seven-phase assembly polls, voting was held in 62 constituencies Saturday. Voting for the remaining phases will be held April 13, April 18, April 23, April 28, May 3 and May 8. The counting of votes is to take place May 11.
