At least 22 killed in US campus shootings, gunman dead

Washington, April 16 (Xinhua) At least 22 people were killed and 21 wounded in two shootings on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech University Monday morning, CNN quoted the university police as saying.

A gunman opened fire in a dormitory and a classroom, according to university police chief Wendell Flinchum, adding that the gunman was dead.

All classes are cancelled, all faculty and staff have been released and asked to go home immediately, according to the official website of Virginia Tech.

Families wishing to reunite with students are suggested to meet at the Inn at Virginia Tech.

The university will open Tuesday and is planning a meeting for the university community to come together to begin to deal with the tragedy.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

The White House said President George W. Bush was "horrified" by the school shootings. "He was horrified, and his immediate reaction was one of deep concern for the families of the victims, the victims themselves, the students, the professors and all of the people of Virginia who have dealt with this shocking incident," said spokeswoman Dana Perino.

The attacks mark the worst shooting incident in the US since 1999 when two gunmen killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
