Pakistani president arrives in Spain - terrorism on agenda
Madrid, April 24 (DPA) Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf arrived Tuesday in Spain for a four-day official visit, with Islamic radicalism and illegal immigration among the items on the agenda.
Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos welcomed Musharraf at Madrid airport. The Pakistani leader was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and King Juan Carlos during the day.
Musharraf arrived in Spain at a time when the authorities have stepped up security following bombings in Algeria and Morocco, which have sparked fears of terrorist attack.
Spain regards Pakistan as a key ally in the fight against Islamic radicalism, according to diplomatic sources.
Madrid is mainly worried about Algerian and Moroccan extremists, but Asian radical groups are also present in the country, and police sources say Pakistani immigrants have sometimes had contacts with Arab radicals.
Musharraf and Spanish leaders were also expected to discuss illegal immigration.
Immigrant boats arriving from Africa to Spain carry increasing numbers of Asians, and a ship intercepted near Mauritania in February had more than 100 Pakistanis among its 369 passengers.
Musharraf and Spanish leaders were also to exchange views on the Spanish-Turkish project of an "alliance of civilizations" to bridge the gap between the West and the Muslim world.
Pakistan is actively involved in the project that is being handled by the United Nations, according to Spanish sources.
Other items on the agenda included the security of Spanish troops in Afghanistan, where they cooperate with Pakistan, as well as industrial, development and cultural cooperation.
On Wednesday, Musharraf was scheduled to travel to the southern city of Cordoba, where he will give a lecture.
Musharraf was accompanied by a delegation of ministers. The visit was his first to Spain since taking power in 1999 and second by a Pakistani leader since 1994 when the then prime minister Benazir Bhutto visited the country.
