Total recall: Australia's first World Cup success in 1987
New Delhi, Feb 25 (IANS) Allan Border's Australia defeated traditional opponents England - thanks partly to an indiscreet reverse sweep by captain Mike Gatting in the final - to lift their maiden World Cup in 1987, and signal the start of a long dominance.
Australia actually finished second to India in the Pool A league, but then defeated Pakistan in the semi-final and eventually England in the title clash at the Eden Gardens in what was then called Calcutta.
In the semi-final, fast bowler Craig McDermott snared his first five-wicket haul of the tournament to help Australia enter their second final in four attempts, and win the Man of the Match award.
In the final, Australia met England, which had defeated India in the other semi-final in Bombay (now Mumbai).
A consistent David Boon continued his form in the final as he smashed his fifth half-century of the tournament (75, 7x4s) to be named the Man of the Final.
Australia also owed their title to the ambitious reverse sweep by Gatting, who was batting well until then. The fatal shot brought his downfall and effectively England's.
