Four years later, Fosters still await justice
New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) It has been nearly four years since British teenager Hannah Foster was brutally raped and killed near her home in Southampton, England. But her grief stricken parents are still running from door to door for a final decision on extradition of the accused.
In a press meet held here Monday, Trevor and Hillary Foster, Hannah's parents, said that after their visit to India last year when they stressed that there was unnecessary delay in the extradition process and unproductive wastage of the court's time, they didn't think they would be repeating the same words a year later.
"At first there was a noticeable improvement in the progress made in the court, so much so that in the summer of 2006 the magistrate in charge was ready to hear final arguments. But then things started faltering. It's February now and the decision on the extradition is not yet taken," said a visibly upset Trevor Foster.
Maninder Pal Singh Kohli, the accused, came to India after fleeing from England soon after the crime. He was finally arrested on July 15, 2004 and is presently held at Tihar Jail.
The teary-eyed parents said that while the magistrate's written response to the defendant's latest bail application saying no such request shall be entertained in the court, is encouraging, it is not enough.
"We have heard encouraging words before," said the father, his voice breaking. "The system throws too much responsibility on the victim. There is no mechanism to ensure progress is made," he said regaining his voice.
Hillary, who clutched her daughter's smiling photograph throughout the conference and held her husband's hand from time to time, said they wanted justice for their first-born.
"People might think that our wounds might have healed in the course of time...but they haven't. After all these years we are still carrying the boulder in our hearts that our daughter will get justice," they said.
The Fosters will attend a court hearing Feb 27 before going back home March 3.
