Three missing as Indonesian ferry sinks

Jakarta, Feb 26 (DPA) Indonesian rescue workers were searching Monday for three missing people after the burnt-out ferry wreckage from last week's accident sank off Jakarta port while investigators and reporters were onboard, officials said.

The charred ferry wreckage had been anchored at about 11 km from Jakarta's Tanjung Priok harbour when it suddenly tilted and submerged with 16 policemen, journalists and investigators from the national transportation safety commission aboard inspecting the damage from a fire last Thursday.

One TV cameraman died in hospital and four others were seriously hurt in the scramble Sunday. Fishing boats picked up 22 more bodies floating in the sea, bringing the death toll to 42.

The Levina I, a passenger and cargo ferry, burst into flames about 80 km off the northern coast of the Indonesian capital four hours after it sailed from Jakarta's Tanjung Priok harbour last week.

At least 274 survivors were rescued, but rescuers fear many passengers may have been trapped in the burning ship. Dozens of survivors were suffering from severe burns.

Police have charged the ferry's captain and navigator with negligence and falsifying documents. If found guilty of negligence, the two could face up to five years in prison.
