Tenures of chief ministers in Punjab

Chandigarh, Feb 27 (IANS) There have been eight Congress chief ministers in nearly 19 years of party rule in Punjab. The Akali Dal had six chief ministers in 12 years of its rule.

With Tuesday's election results announced for the 13th Punjab legislative assembly, political equations in the state will change.

Here is a brief history of various governments, including the President's Rule, since the reorganization of the state Nov 1, 1966. After 1966, elections were held in 1967, 1969, 1972, 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992, 1997 and 2002 and 2007.

The following have been the chief ministers:
