EU warns negative impact of US military strikes on Somali peace process
Brussels, Jan 15, IRNA ,
The European Union and Somalia stressed Monday that an inclusive national reconciliation is the only way to establish peace and security in the war-torn African country and both sides rejected the use of military force.
"We believe strongly that the only way to guarantee security is the political way. We have to bring together all those who represent the Somali people," EU Commissioner for development and humanitarian aid, Louis Michel, told reporters after holding talks with the speaker of the Somali Parliament, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan, in Brussels Monday.
The EU is in favour of an international peace force, accepted by all parties, added the Commissioner.
"Of course, we don't believe in military action. We don't believe in bombing," said Michel adding that US strikes are worrying as they could incite to more military activity and could have a negative impact on the peace process.
On his part, Sheikh Adan said, "military force cannot solve the problems of Somalia."
He said 15 years of war and violence is enough. "We can only reach peace through reconciliation that will include the moderate representatives of the Islamic courts and other groups and factions." The United States launched an air raid in southern Somalia last week killing a large number of people.
