Apex court urged to make public letter to Lakshmanan
New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) The Supreme Court was Monday urged to make public an anonymous letter sent to Judge A.R. Lakshmanan, who almost broke down in the court last week after it raised questions about his hearing a case related to alleged corruption by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
D.K. Garg, counsel for Congress activist Vishwanath Chaturvedi, addressed a letter to the registrar (judicial) of the apex court seeking a copy of the letter of March 16 so that he could initiate appropriate legal proceedings.
It was on Chaturvedi's petition the court had March 1 ordered a preliminary enquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged disproportionate assets of Mulayam Singh Yadav, his son Akhilesh Yadav and other family members. Akhilesh Yadav had filed a petition seeking review of the judgement.
Garg in his letter said: "Subsequently, it seems that the creator of the anonymous letter released the said letter to the electronic and print media on March 16. On the same day several TV channels had exhibited the said anonymous letter repeatedly."
He said the source and origin of the letter could be traced with little effort.
Quoting newspaper reports about the contents of the letter, Garg said: "Faith, belief and confidence of people cannot ebut be termed to be the hallmark of the judicial system of this country. And if matters proceed like this, there would neither be faith nor belief nor confidence in the judiciary."
"This type of ignoble activities may prejudice the interest of the writ petitioner."
He requested that the letter be placed in the file of the writ petition he should be provided a copy of it to enable him to initiate legal proceedings.
