Dhoni family's security worries Jharkhand MLAs

Ranchi, March 19 (IANS) Jharkhand legislators Monday expressed concern over the security of Indian wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's family, a day after his under-construction house here was damaged by cricket fans angry over India's loss to Bangladesh in the World Cup.

"Unruly mobs headed by the youth wing of alliance partners attacked Dhoni's house. The government should ensure security to his family members and take stern action against those who attacked the house," C.P Singh, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator, said in the state assembly.

Saurav Narayan Singh, a Congress legislator, also raised the issue. Speaker Aalamgir Aalam then directed the state government to provide security to the Dhoni family.

On Sunday, around 200 people under the banner of the Jharkhand Yuva Morcha (JYM) attacked Dhoni's house in Harmu housing colony. JYM is the youth wing of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which is part of Jharkhand's ruling alliance.

The house was being built on 4,000 sq. feet of land, costing around Rs.5 million, gifted to the dashing player by former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda.

Protesters also burnt an effigy of the cricketer and shouted slogans like "Dhoni Murdabad" (Down with Dhoni) and demanded that the land gifted to him be taken back.

Police have now provided security at the Dhoni family's home in the Mecon housing colony.

In their very first tie of the World Cup in the West Indies, India lost to Bangladesh Saturday, angering fans across the country. Along with other Indian batsmen, Dhoni failed and was out for a duck.
