Buddhadeb scotches land acquisition rumour at Deganga

Kolkata, March 24 (IANS) Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, with Nandigram backlash still troubling his government, Saturday said no land acquisition plan for industrialisation was afoot in Deganga village in the North 24 Parganas district.

"There is no move to acquire land at Deganga," Bhattacharya said in a press statement as the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist's (CPI-M) state committee met here Saturday to dissect the macabre Nandigram flare-up.

Bhattacharya, who was participating in the meeting, said the notification for land acquisition at Deganga was the wile of a government official who was show-caused and transferred.

"There was no proposal to acquire land there before or now," he said.

As the wounds of Nandigram - where 14 people died in police firing March 14 while protesting land acquisition for a special economic zone - are yet to heel, people of Deganga March 17 clashed with police for similar reasons.

The incident occurred in Deganga village when a government team went there to survey land for an industrial project. Thousands of villagers clashed with police and set on fire their vehicle in protest.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has planned a Deganga programme on Sunday.

West Bengal is in ferment after the killings in Nandigram, about 150 km southwest of Kolkata.

About 40 km from here, Singur in Hooghly district is another place where people are in violent protest mode against acquisition of farmland for a Tata Motors car factory.
