Berlin gets ready to host EU 50th birthday party
Berlin, March 24 (DPA) European Union leaders gathered here Saturday for the start of two days of celebrations to mark the golden jubilee of the 27-nation bloc.
An extensive cultural programme that includes classical music performances, museum exhibitions and a pop concert will accompany the formal signing of a declaration of EU values Sunday.
The heads of state and government leaders kick of the celebrations Saturday evening when they attend a performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony by the Berlin Philharmonic.
Following that they will attend a banquet given in their honour by German President Horst Koehler at his official residence, Bellevue Palace.
Some 5,000 police have been drafted in to provide security amid calls by leftwing groups, trade unionists and anti-globalization protesters for a peaceful demonstration Sunday.
