Fans want hard decisions on team
Chandigarh, March 24 (IANS) Disappointed cricket fans in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Saturday demanded that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) take some hard decisions to oust "non-performing" and ageing players and build a team for the future.
Reacting to India's humiliating defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in a do-or-die battle in the World Cup, fans and budding cricketers demanded that "passengers" in the Indian team - whose only contribution to the game and the team was past records - should be downloaded.
"I wasted the entire night waiting for an Indian win. First it was the humiliation of India fighting with its back to the wall after being beaten by Bangladesh. Now they have failed to perform when it mattered. Why can't these fellows come good like the Australians, South Africans and others in core games," asked Harkirat Singh.
At bars and night clubs in Chandigarh, Ludhiana and other places, reservations made to cheer team India by enthusiastic cricket fans came to nothing after the meek Indian surrender.
"Their body language right from the first ball was that of a loser. Did you see the expression on (skipper) Dravid's face? What are all their records for when they cannot win such games? Are they fit only to play in India?" asked an entrepreneur Rajeev as he rued having spent Rs.4,000 for viewing the match at a new nightclub.
In Jalandhar, hometown of spinner Harbhajan Singh, cricketers were shattered by India's performance.
"The top players must have been thinking of their next modeling assignments. Where was the will to play the game?" said budding cricketer Raghav Sharma.
For school cricket team coach Devinder Singh, the downfall of Indian cricket has started.
"I think that the present team is fit only to play teams like Bermuda, Netherlands and Scotland. Let us have a series with these teams - that too on Indian pitches," he said.
