Hussey looking to maintain place in Aussie team

Basseterre (St Kitts), March 24 (IANS) Competition for places in the Australian team is always fierce, and this cricket World Cup is no different.

Michael Hussey, the talismanic "finisher" who averages 62.3 in 63 one-day internationals with two centuries and a strike rate of 91, is under pressure to keep his place in the side. He also averages just under 80 in 16 Tests, with five centuries.

His dilemma comes from the fact that Andrew Symonds is fit again to play and could be considered for Saturday's match against South Africa at Warner Park.

Middle order batsman Brad Hodge has been in fine form and all-rounder Shane Watson is highly thought of. The winners of Saturday's showdown will take two points through to the Super Eight, second round.

Hussey said he was hoping to continue to play his role in the Australian side as he looked forward to the big clash against the Proteas.

"The guys up at the top are doing the job. I'd like to come to the middle and hit a few sixes but that's the nature of where I bat," Hussey told reporters.

"The boys are really training very, very well, we are really pumped up for the game against South Africa. The last couple of games have been good to get used to conditions. I think we have played well but we really haven't been tested. It's going to be a great game against South Africa."

He said despite recent single figure scores he expected to keep his place in the team and promised to bounce back.
