Probe ordered in Meerut jail clash
Meerut, March 30 (IANS) Five officials of the Meerut jail were suspended after a seven-member inspecting team of the Agra Police were assaulted by jail staff and inmates Friday and an enquiry was ordered into the incident.
"We have started our probe into the matter and five jail officials have been suspended," District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram said.
Additional District Magistrate (Meerut) Manvander Singh has been asked to file an immediate report by Saturday and a detailed report of the incident in the next 15 days.
Earlier in the day, Meerut Jail officials and inmates attacked the Agra Police personnel who came on a surprise inspection following intelligence reports of mobile phone use on the jail premises.
The attack came after a raiding police team recovered an unauthorised mobile phone from the jail Thursday.
Meshram has also asked the jail administrator to instal mobile jammers on the jail premises.
The search party, which arrived at 8.30 p.m. in the jail, found that inmates of the high-security prison were using cell phones and even had access to pornographic material.
The inspection team seized a number of mobile phones, CDs and a huge amount of money. The Provincial Armed Constabulary has been deployed outside the jail as a precautionary measure.
The Election Commission has issued an order to step up vigil in the jails in Uttar Pradesh and sanitise them of 'undesirable elements' as security measures ahead of the assembly polls.
