Reservation for Muslims in legislature must: Milli Council
By TwoCircles.net Reporter,
New Delhi: Muslims in India should be given reservation in the central and state legislative bodies, demanded All India Milli Council (AIMC) general secretary Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam on 9th May.
Referring to the Women Reservation Bill, he pointed out that if the political leaders thought that the said bill could empower women, then why do not they turn their eyes to Muslims who comprise 13.4% of country’s population and are facing grim poverty and lack of resources in all fields?
He further said the proportion of Muslims in the Parliament and Assemblies has been declining day by day. He demanded the Union government to grant reservation to Muslims in parliamentary and assembly incumbencies in such a way that they would be able to enter these bodies in proportion to their population.
Appealing to Muslims, he said unless we demonstrate our political consciousness and become sincere and awake with respect to our demands, we would not be able to get any facilities. The general secretary of the Milli Council also emphasized that if our political parties do not pay attention to reservations for Muslim community, which Muslims deserve both economically and educationally, before coming elections, then, such parties have no moral right to appeal Muslims to vote for them.
